High ISO #3
I recently posted a series of photos that I took as a passenger
on the 401 to Toronto. Going 100 kmh is not ideal for taking
photos, but after hearing a podcast telling me to not be afraid
I bumped up the ISO to be able to take the photos at 1/2500
of a second. I actually enjoyed the drive, and once again I am
happy with the results....
High ISO #2
Recently, I attended the Hungarian Ball in Montreal and
decided to only bring my pocket camera. In addition, I
decided I didn't want to use a flash, so obviously I would
be shooting in High ISO mode- something that it seems I
have been taught is very bad.. The photos were just for
flickr or facebook where noise is not such a great problem....
and this way I did take pictures and have something to
remember the evening by.
Come on, you can do it
Flickr upgrade
burlington a video by alexbrz on Flickr.
After the culling of my photos, my next stage was to sequence the photos within the sets. We are getting shorter and shorter attention spans when even clicking the next photo button requires effort. I have always been a proponent of looking at photos in the sequence that the photographer decides. This combination has convinced me to make short videos of each set and upload to Flickr.
Flickr cleanup
I have been cleaning up my Flickr site photos. There is nothing really new with regards to editing; everyone shows too much. I went through my sets and removed approximately half of each one.
The deleting process is somewhat addictive; I remember at a workshop the instructor asked for everyone to just submit their best four photos from the day. Of my 400 or so, went easily down to 100 then 50 then 15 then really couldn't see what to keep at all. The one above was one I showed. What is interesting for me today was that he mentioned that perhaps the photo would be better if the two objects did not end before the edge of the frame.
This is it - What do you think? - What does it say about me that it took me six years to check!
From Robert Frank the Americans #2
A continuation of yesterday about whether the photograph would be taken today - I thought I would share a link to an old blog of five years ago about today's critiques of some old master photos. Sure they would have had a field day with this one also,
But I do wonder if these photos are like the old great movies. Could those movies be made today - I don't think so as we no longer are as innocent or wish to suspend our belief even for 90 minutes.
From Robert Frank's the Americans
I believe that in the old days the photographer left his camera on F8 at a certain focal distance and because there wasn't as much need for the golden hour light in Black and White, this system was very efficient.
With the auto-focus cameras of today, I don't think this photo would be taken anymore.

Got this on Facebook - thought worth sharing
I enjoyed the thread as well with comments adding
railroad tracks, fire hydrants, stuffed animals or
sewer caps...think I have been guilty of a few of these!!!
Old Flickr Project
On April 19, 2009 I took a bike ride with my camera and a 50mm lens.
I got home with 76 pictures. Nothing fantastic; but I had just heard about a book about Robert Franks contact sheets and thought it could be interesting to see one person's every picture. Obviously I did not take the pictures with this in mind so I spend an hour or so in Lightroom cropping and adding some effects to make it not too boring..I hope.
It probably would be more interesting if I went with someone else and we contrasted our images. Will have to do that next time

Digital Story Podcast Great Idea
Derrick Story is another very professional and regular podcaster but his was one of the podcasts that I dropped from my regular rotation. I decided to keep downloading but selecting which ones to listen to - instead of all of them. Recently I decided to listen to podcast 255 which was about the 11 things one should try to do in 2011.The one I am recommending to everyone (seeing that it is too late for me) is to video record an elder family member discussing their photo albums .

Classics in Lego, a set by Balakov on Flickr.
A lot of fun to go through these classic photos. I think I got more than 50%.
My favourites were near the end Halsman, Newman and Muybridge
